If you’ve spent any time on Facebook or Instagram, you’ve probably seen them—those “Free Roof!” ads promising homeowners a brand-new roof, covered by insurance or some mystery “roofing program.”
Sounds amazing, right? Wrong.
These ads aren’t run by real roofing companies. They’re marketing scams designed to collect your personal information and sell it for big money—not just once, but over and over again for months or even years.
At Aura Home Exteriors, we wanted to see just how bad it really is. So we did something crazy…
We Signed Up for 3 “Free Roof” Ads – Here’s What Happened
To test what happens when a homeowner enters their info, we filled out forms on three different “Free Roof” ad pages. Within 5 days, here’s what we got:
📞 184 phone calls from contractors we never signed up with📩 57 voicemails from different companies trying to sell us on a “roofing program”📈 Relentless follow-up emails from companies we’d never heard of
And the worst part? It won’t stop anytime soon.
How the Scam Works: The Free Roof Lie
1. You Click the Ad & Enter Your Info
The ad promises a “free roof” or “insurance-paid replacement.” The form asks for your name, phone number, address, and sometimes even insurance details.
2. A Marketing Company Collects Your Data
Here’s what most people don’t realize—you’re not dealing with a real roofing company. Your info goes straight to a lead generation company that doesn’t install roofs at all.
3. Your Info is Sold to Roofing Contractors (Round 1)
These marketing companies sell your lead to roofing contractors who are desperate for jobs. Multiple contractors buy the same lead, which is why you get a flood of phone calls within hours.
4. Your Info is Resold Again (Round 2)
After a few weeks, when those roofing contractors have tried (and failed) to book you, the marketing company resells your info to a different set of contractors. More calls, more voicemails, and more spam.
5. Your Info Gets Dumped into Random Marketing Lists
Once they’ve squeezed everything they can out of the roofing leads, your info gets repackaged and sold again—this time, to completely unrelated industries.
Next thing you know, you’re getting calls about:
Solar panels you never inquired about
Scuba gear discounts (because apparently, why not?)
Loans and credit offers from companies you’ve never heard of
At this point, your personal information has been sold dozens of times, making these scammers hundreds of dollars off your name alone.
The Fake Business & AI Scammer Problem
Another thing we uncovered? Most of these ads use AI-generated actors, fake business addresses, and even paid-for reviews to make them seem legit.
✔ AI-generated spokespersons reading scripts about a “government roofing program”✔ Fake Google My Business listings with locations that don’t actually exist✔ Doctored 5-star reviews from bots to build fake trust
Meanwhile, actual roofing companies never see a penny of this money, and real homeowners get stuck in a cycle of endless spam calls.
How to Protect Yourself from Roofing Scams
If you see an ad for a “Free Roof”, follow these steps to stay safe:
✅ Do NOT enter your personal info on Facebook or Instagram roofing ads.✅ Always research the company—Google their name, check their website, and look for REAL reviews.✅ Never sign anything on the spot—Scammers use high-pressure tactics to trap you in a contract.✅ Call your insurance company directly if you think you have storm damage—don’t trust a random company to do it for you.

Final Thought: Don’t Let Scammers Win
These marketing companies are making millions selling your personal information over and over again. They don’t care about your home. They don’t do roofing work. They only care about turning you into a product they can sell.
